Ahmad Al Awadhi is an Emirati artist. He tries to connect the UAE’s youth with its past. This connection helps preserve the country’s heritage.
Better known as ‘Rukni’, the 60-year-old began exhibiting his work in 1992. A friend said his paintings were too good to go unseen. They depicted traditional Emirati architecture, dallah coffee pots, and wildlife.
Traditional houses remind Al Awadhi of his upbringing in Sharjah. He hopes to portray the story of the UAE to Emirati youth. He also wants to reach an international audience.
Artist Statement-
Art holds immense significance in my life, and I am completely self-taught. I began painting as a child. Initially, my work was not valued. The situation has evolved. Now, I am embraced with love and respect from everyone around me. It is vital for me to capture and showcase the vibrant aspects of my country and culture. These elements are deeply rooted in my identity as an Emirati. Through my art, I aspire to reveal the beauty of my nation to the world.
The portraits I create show my profound admiration for iconic figures. A portrait of Pope Francis is one of my most treasured works. It also features the Grand Imam of Al Azhar, Ahmed el Tayeb. It captures their historic meeting in Abu Dhabi during the UAE’s Year of Tolerance in 2019. This painting now graces the walls of the Ministry of Tolerance’s office.
