Samar Farooq

Samar Farooq is a contemporary Islamic calligrapher whose practice is rooted in the timeless traditions of Chinese Arabic Calligraphy (Sini Style) and Almoravid Kufic Script. Originally trained as a finance professional, she discovered her true artistic calling in the spiritual discipline of calligraphy, where every stroke reflects mindfulness, devotion, and inner transformation.

Having studied under internationally acclaimed master calligraphers from China and Morocco, Samar combines traditional techniques with a contemporary artistic vision. Her work explores the profound connection between faith, language, and beauty, transforming sacred words into expressive visual art. For Samar, calligraphy is not merely an artistic practice but a journey of Tazkiya-e-Nafs—the purification of the soul.

Samar has exhibited her work across the United Kingdom and has led workshops, masterclasses, and live demonstrations for universities, cultural institutions, festivals, and corporate organizations. She has also facilitated international Islamic calligraphy retreats, sharing the rich heritage of this art form with students from around the world.

In 2026, Samar relocated to Dubai, embracing a new chapter in her artistic journey. She completed an artist residency at Studio Thirteen, Alserkal Avenue, where she further expanded her creative practice within the UAE’s vibrant contemporary art scene. Through her work, Samar continues to preserve the legacy of traditional Islamic calligraphy while inspiring new audiences to experience its beauty, spirituality, and cultural significance.

Artist statement

My practice is rooted in the belief that calligraphy is more than the art of beautiful writing—it is a sacred journey of reflection, discipline, and spiritual growth. Through the timeless traditions of Chinese Arabic Calligraphy (Sini Style) and Almoravid Kufic Script, I seek to transform divine words into visual expressions that evoke peace, contemplation, and connection.

Every stroke is guided by intention, patience, and devotion, reflecting the harmony between form and meaning. Inspired by the rich heritage of Islamic art while embracing a contemporary perspective, my work invites viewers to slow down, reflect, and experience the profound beauty of the written word. For me, calligraphy is an ongoing practice of Tazkiya-e-Nafs—the purification of the soul where faith, craftsmanship, and creativity become one.
